Despite it being
the day of the football World Cup Final, Duncanrig
Rambling Club set off north to the highlands around
Bridge of Orchy with a fully-booked busload of
members. Unusually, the itinerary included 3 walks.
The main walk was a 9-mile section of the West
Highland Way from the Inveroran Hotel to Tyndrum
with a shorter 7-mile alternative which missed out
the climb between Inveroran and Bridge of Orchy
while a third group undertook a more testing ascent
of Ben Inverveigh. After a mile of steady ascent on
a good track the small group for Ben Inverveigh
split from the main walk which continued through
open woodland to Bridge of Orchy where, after a
short climb to the station, the party followed the
route of the West Highland Line south on the Old
Military Road under the looming shoulder of Beinn
Dorain. The damp, windy conditions lent their own
atmospheric effect as the low cloud clung to the
tops and a hazy sun occasionally broke through while
the recently replenished burns cascaded crazily down
the steep slopes. The strong west wind eventually
dispersed the cloud and the second half of the day
offered remarkably clear conditions which developed
into a glorious evening. The full effect of the wind
was experienced by the party which climbed up the
vague track onto the open moorland towards Ben
Inverveigh where the view north took in the winding
Abhainn Shira as it snaked down to top up the
already over-filled Loch Tulla which, in turn,
spilled out to rush dramatically towards the bridge
at Bridge of Orchy. After a sheltered lunch stop
this group spent little time admiring the views as
they hastened down out of the January conditions to
the shelter of the lower slopes and the waiting
coach. All 3 groups met up at Tyndrum to head for a
well-deserved social hour at the Crianlarich Hotel
before returning to East Kilbride and the second
half of the footie.
